Why I Use Tallow in My Soap (and Why It’s Not What You Think)

Let’s Talk About the Ingredient That Makes People Pause

If I had a dollar for every time someone raised an eyebrow when I said “tallow,” I could probably buy… more soap ingredients 😄

Tallow has gotten a bit of a bad reputation in modern skincare conversations. But long before it became misunderstood, it was actually one of the most common—and trusted—ingredients in everyday soap.

It wasn’t trendy. It wasn’t fancy.
It was used because it worked.

So… What Is Tallow?

Tallow is a rendered fat, traditionally sourced from beef. And while that might sound unusual today, it was once a staple in soapmaking households around the world. In soap, tallow helps create bars that:

  • Are firm and long-lasting
  • Produce a creamy, stable lather
  • Feel balanced instead of harsh

In other words, it helps make soap that does its job well—without being fussy about it.

In small-batch soapmaking, ingredients need to play nicely together. I use tallow because it pairs beautifully with goat milk and castor oil, creating a bar that feels substantial, creamy, and satisfying to use.

Old-Fashioned? Maybe. And I’m Okay With That.

Soap trends come and go (some faster than others), but traditional formulas tend to stick around for a reason. Tallow reminds me that innovation isn’t always about adding more ingredients—it’s often about understanding which ones already work well.

Tallow is part of a tradition that values making the most of what’s available rather than wasting it.

Choosing ingredients is never just a technical decision for me. It’s part of how I approach my work—with care, intention, and respect for the people who will use these products. In faith and in business, thoughtfulness matters.

Looking Ahead

Tallow will continue to be a foundational ingredient in my soap bars and shampoo bars when Goaty Goat Soap relaunches in March. It’s not a shortcut—it’s a deliberate choice.
