Essential Oils vs Fragrance Oils: What I Use and Why

A Question I Get All the Time

If you spend any time around natural products, you’ve probably heard this before:
“Essential oils are always better, right?”

The honest answer?
It’s a little more complicated than that.

Both essential oils and fragrance oils have a place in handmade products—when they’re used thoughtfully and responsibly.

A Quick Look at Essential Oils

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts, and they can be absolutely beautiful to work with. But they’re also potent, which means they need to be handled with care.

A few important things people don’t always realize:

  • Natural doesn’t automatically mean gentler
  • Some essential oils have strict usage limits
  • Proper dilution really matters

Essential oils are powerful tools—but like all powerful things, they need to be respected with safe usage rates followed.

What About Fragrance Oils?

Fragrance oils are carefully formulated scent blends. The ones I use are non-toxic and selected specifically for skin-safe applications.

They offer a few practical advantages:

  • More scent consistency
  • A wider range of fragrance options
  • Better stability in finished products

When chosen carefully, fragrance oils can be a safe and reliable option—especially for certain scent profiles.

Why I Use Both (No Ingredient Drama Here)

Rather than drawing hard lines, I focus on safety, transparency, and balance. Some scents shine best as essential oil blends, while others are better achieved with fragrance oils.

Each product is evaluated individually, based on how it’s used and how it performs—not on fear-based rules.

A Calm, Informed Approach

There’s a lot of loud messaging in skincare that pushes people toward fear instead of understanding. My goal is the opposite: to offer clear, calm information so you can feel confident about what you’re using.

You’ll continue to see both essential oil blends and non-toxic fragrance oils in Goaty Goat Soap products—always chosen intentionally and used within safe guidelines.
